This summer, school principals and district-level leaders began a journey for the year with a focus on the word IMPACT. We were tasked with thinking of the impact the educators have in our work with students as well as thinking about the impact learning experiences have on students' growth and engagement.  In this process, we have looked also at people in our community whose impact has had a meaningful impact on RSS. 

To honor a long-standing partnership with local WBTV news reporter, David Whisenant, RSS celebrated him with a “RSS Impact Award” at the RSS Board of Education meeting on December 11.  Whisenant will retire this week after 32 years in journalism. 

The lasting impact of Whisenant’s journalism excellence, fair coverage, and pursuit of giving voice to those who need it most is far-reaching and perpetual. Whisenant has long been an advocate for Rowan-Salisbury schools beginning with his days as a student at Overton Elementary, Knox Middle, and Salisbury High. Choosing to raise his own family in Rowan County, Whisenant sent his son, Kyle, through RSS schools, as well.  Kyle currently serves as the assistant principal at Landis Elementary and the Whisenant grandchildren attend Isenberg Elementary. 

In addition to his personal connection to RSS schools, Whisenant has built a strong relationship with many RSS Superintendents and district leadership. His integrity in reporting has inspired a sharing of information that has helped Whisenant cover stories, both positive and less positive, about RSS that support the school system’s goals and the community’s interests at the same time. Our local celebrity news reporter has served us with the greatest of intentions and created a  tremendous impact on showing students how to demonstrate passion and excellence in their work and to work in service to others.
