A Family Affair

Kim Turnbull began working at Southeast Middle School (SEMS) in 2000, and she continued to teach at SEMS while her daughter attended as a student. Little did she know, one day, they would both work together as teachers at the same school.

Kim left SEMS and taught at several other schools, including South Rowan High School, Mt. Ulla Elementary School and Clemmons Middle School. After a few years away, Kim returned home to SEMS and now teaches sixth-grade language arts and social studies. She's also the SEMS' 2022-23 Teacher of the Year.

This year, her daughter Elena began her teaching career as a CTE marketing teacher at the school.

Elena remembers that as a student, she enjoyed her time at SEMS and was active in volleyball. She used the volleyball skills she began learning in middle school to go on to UNC Wilmington to play beach volleyball.

She earned her master's degree in marketing and communications.

Elena loves working with kids and making a difference in their lives, especially at the middle school stage.

Kim says, “I like to work with my daughter. She can give me newer ideas and help me with the technology that is coming.”

Elena says, “Whenever I need help, I can run to [my mom] and ask her for help.”

Both Turnbulls are excited about working and growing together in this new phase of their lives, as well as connecting with the Rowan-Salisbury Schools family to support Southeast to be a true family affair.
