Ron Clark House System at Rowan County Early College
This school year we have implemented the Ron Clark
House System. It is a system of giving students a shared sense of identity and purpose, schools have been using House Systems for centuries. While House Systems can take many forms, we used the system developed by the Ron Clark Academy in Atlanta, GA as the foundation for our Houses. In this system, every student is randomly sorted into one of four Houses supervised by several faculty mentors. These Houses are collections of students from across all four grade levels at our school led by one or more student House Leaders. Each house has its own history, motto, color, and slogan. Together, House members participate in competitions, plan events, and earn points for their House both within and outside the classroom. At the end of the year, the House with the most points earns a special celebration in their honor.
At Rowan County Early College, we want students to feel welcomed, included, and that school is an exciting place to be. Though we are four Houses, we are first and foremost members of the RCEC community. We want to provide students with opportunities to develop as leaders and to build connections with other students. By adapting the House System developed by the Ron Clark Academy for our context, we want to foster an atmosphere of positivity and fun through challenges, House Days, celebrations, and other events throughout the school year. We hope that by giving students more opportunities to lead the pack in ways that match their strengths, every student can feel that RCEC is the place for them.
We have kicked off our school year with House Spirit Contests, Field Day, a Kickball Tournament, and more. We are excited to keep the momentum going with our House System to see how it will enhance our student’s school experience!
