Parent Coffee Hour - May

Join us Tuesday, May 11th, for our final Parent Coffee Hour of the 2020/21 school year. The topic this month is about summer opportunities for your scholar. The Zoom link is shared in Class Dojo. We hope to see you there!

Parent Coffee Hour - May

On Thursday, April 29th, Mrs. Davies' class held the wedding of Q and U! Dr. Tony Watlington, Sr. was their honored guest along with staff members of Overton. During the wedding, Mrs. Davies read how Q & U first came together. After the 'ceremony', a reception was held and as with any wedding, there were gifts. All of which started with 'qu', of course! It was truly an experience that will be remembered by all.

Poetry Slam 2021

We were able to continue having our annual poetry slam this year by holding it virtually. Along with our returning poet Tyeshia Willis, aka TruthBTold, from Charlotte, N.C., two new poets joined us this year from New Mexico. Our virtual host, Scarlett Cortez, shared her history of writing since third grade and memories as an ESL student. Poet Marcial Delgado, also from New Mexico, has been writing since he was a child as well. He recited his poem in English and then in Spanish. We thank them for sharing their craft with us and look forward to seeing them again! Mrs. Muhammad has hosted our annual poetry slam for the last four years during the poetry month of April. Thank you Mrs. Muhammad for sharing your love for poetry with our students here at Overton!

Lunch Read Along with Livingstone College Student Athletes

We are very thankful for Livingstone College Athletic Trainer Jaime Kent, who partnered with us to provide a virtual "Lunch Read Along" opportunity for 2nd and 3rd grade scholars.  As part of a CIAA Reading Initiative to encourage and promote reading, Livingstone College student athletes read former UNC Tarheel basketball player Jawad Williams' book, Nailah & Nash Take Tokyo, via Zoom while Overton scholars enjoyed lunch in their classrooms.  The book tells about the adventures of Jawad Williams' children as they travelled overseas with their international basketball playing father.  The athletes even practiced a few words in Japanese with Overton scholars at the end of the Read Along.
