When Felicia Young, a math teacher at Knox Middle School (KMS), started posting fun and engaging math tutorials on TikTok during the height of remote learning, she didn’t just catch the attention of her students. North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper noticed too.
In April, Cooper praised Young in his State of the State Address for her innovative teaching techniques, and today, he made a visit to KMS to celebrate her in person.
"At a time when interest was waning, remote learning was hard – she [Young] found a way to get children interested,” Cooper said. “She’s representative of so many teachers across this state who were devising new strategies during all of this.”
Mrs. Young represents excellence and what we strive to be, which is extraordinary in all that we do,” Superintendent Dr. Tony B. Watlington, Sr. stated in his remarks.
While at Knox, Cooper also visited Exceptional Children teachers who were participating in a professional development session and saw summer school in action.
