Millbridge Elementary students now have the opportunity to participate in a yoga club after school.
Mrs. Christa Graff, the school counselor, leads yoga instruction on the first and second Tuesday of each month. Students and several staff volunteers participate in an hour-long class learning various yoga poses and techniques.
Graff began implementing yoga instruction in some of her guidance classes because she noticed students needed help with stress and anger management. The students responded well to the yoga instruction giving Graff the idea to create a yoga club to give students more exposure to the practice.
Some of the benefits of yoga for children include stress management through breathing, awareness, meditation, and healthy movement. Yoga also builds concentration, increases confidence and positive self-image, and it gives students a chance to be a part of a healthy non-competitive group.
