Erwin Turns 50!

Erwin Turns 50

In the spring of 1967, a new school opened in the Eastern part of the county. The Charles C. Erwin Middle School was named by the Board of Education in honor of Charles C. Erwin who was Superintendent of the Rowan County Schools for 20 years from 1945 until 1965. It originally housed 7-9th grade students.

Currently, Charles C. Erwin Middle School, affectionately called Erwin, now educates 6th – 8th grade students from five elementary feeder schools. This year with around 800 students, we are celebrating its 50 years of public school service.

We kicked off the year with spirit shirts which students are allowed to wear each Monday. On Saturday, September 23rd, we hosted a 5K that involved community members, staff members, and students. Our front lobby is filled with memorabilia from throughout the years – you may want to stop in and see if your middle school yearbook picture is featured!

Several events are planned for both students and community members to celebrate our beloved school’s birthday: a new school song will be revealed with lyrics written by students, a time capsule designed and developed by our students will be buried to commemorate the year, and a huge birthday party will be thrown in the spring. Our next community event is our vendor fair on November 4th where you can shop from over 30 vendors and bid in a silent auction filled with goodies.

For pictures of this commemorative year, please follow the hashtag #Erwinis50.
