Student Devices

  • Grades PreK–8: iPads
  • Grades 9–12: iPads with keyboard cases (MacBooks for qualifying college-level/AP students)

Devices are issued to students for learning at school and home. We encourage responsible care and use at all times. All student devices are managed and monitored by our district.

Security & Filtering

  • zScaler: Filters web content to block unsafe or inappropriate sites — even at home.
  • Mosyle: Our mobile device management system that allows us to install apps, monitor settings, and protect student data.
  • Gaggle: Monitors student accounts (Google, email, etc.) for safety concerns and alerts trusted adults when needed.

Learning Tools We Use

  • ClassLink: One-click access to all approved learning apps — no need to remember dozens of passwords.
  • Infinite Campus: Our Student Information System (SIS) where families can view grades, attendance, schedules, and report cards. Parents can log in through the Parent Portal for real-time updates on their child’s progress.
  • Canvas: Our Learning Management System for lessons, assignments, and communication.
  • Google Workspace for Education: Secure student accounts for Docs, Slides, Sheets, and Gmail (monitored).
  • AI Tools: Some students use teacher-approved Artificial Intelligence tools for learning — always with clear guidelines and safety in place.

How You Can Help at Home

  • Encourage your child to charge their device each night
  • Help them use ClassLink to access school apps
  • Talk with them about responsible online behavior
  • Reach out if a device is lost, damaged, or not working

Lost, Stolen, and Damaged, OH MY!

If a device is lost, stolen, or seriously damaged: Report it to the school immediately so we can investigate and begin the replacement or repair process.

If stolen, a police report may be required before a replacement is issued.

If your child’s device is damaged, they should report it to their teacher or another staff member right away. The school will help return the device to the Technology Department so our team can evaluate the issue. Families should not attempt to repair devices at home — doing so can cause further damage and may void warranties. Rowan-Salisbury Schools does not offer a device protection plan, but each student pays a $20 annual Technology Usage Fee. This fee helps us maintain devices and reduces the cost of iPad or MacBook repairs to $20 per incident for the school year (not including cases). While this fee helps cover repairs, it also teaches students to be responsible digital citizens. If this fee presents a hardship, please contact your school’s administrator or Instructional Technology Facilitator to request assistance.

To pay your child’s $20 Technology Usage Fee, Rowan-Salisbury Schools uses SchoolCash Online — a secure and convenient way to pay school-related fees, including technology, field trips, and yearbooks. Visit SchoolCash Online to register for a free account (it takes less than two minutes). Once logged in, you can view and pay the Technology Usage Fee assigned to your student using a credit card. If you need help, visit the SchoolCash Online Help Desk. Thank you for helping us keep devices supported and learning uninterrupted!

Fee Structure

We use a tiered fee system to help cover the cost of repairs or replacements. Here’s how it works:

Damage from Negligence

First and second incidents: $20 per repair

Third incident or more: Full repair cost (e.g., up to $499 for MacBook liquid damage, $150 for iPad screen)

Lost Items

iPad (Grades K–8): $299.99

iPad Keyboard Case (Grades 9–12): $349.99

MacBook Air: $799.99

Charging cords/bricks: $20 each

iPad case: $30–50 depending on model

Families should not attempt to repair devices at home. Doing so may cause more damage and result in additional fees.

Technology Usage Fee Reminder

Each student pays a $20 annual Technology Usage Fee. This fee reduces the cost of the first two device repairs to $20 each, but it does not cover lost devices or accessories, or multiple repeated incidents.

At Rowan-Salisbury Schools, we believe students should be able to learn, explore, and create in a safe and secure digital environment. As technology becomes a bigger part of the classroom and everyday life, it’s more important than ever to protect our students online. That’s why we’ve built a multi-layered approach to internet safety — combining smart technology tools with thoughtful teaching practices. From web filtering and account monitoring to digital citizenship lessons, we’re committed to keeping students safe while helping them become responsible digital citizens.

Internet Safety: How We Protect Your Child Online

Keeping students safe online is one of our top priorities. At Rowan-Salisbury Schools, we use multiple layers of protection to ensure your child can explore, learn, and create in a secure digital environment — whether they’re at school or at home.

Web Filtering with zScaler

We use zScaler, a cloud-based content filter, to block inappropriate or unsafe websites — including those with adult content, gambling, violence, and proxies. This filter is active anytime your child is using a school-issued device, even off campus. If an educational site is blocked by mistake, staff can request it be reviewed.

Account Monitoring with Gaggle

To support digital safety and emotional well-being, we use Gaggle to monitor activity across our Google Workspace for Education tools — including Gmail, Docs, and Drive. Gaggle uses AI and trained safety experts to flag inappropriate content, signs of self-harm, bullying, or other safety concerns, so school staff can respond quickly and appropriately.

Device Management with Mosyle

All student iPads and MacBooks are managed through Mosyle, our Mobile Device Management (MDM) system. It helps us:

Remotely install apps and updates

Enforce safety settings and restrictions

Monitor for unusual or unsafe activity

Prevent use of unauthorized apps and VPNs

Digital Citizenship & Training

Our students also receive instruction in Digital Citizenship — learning how to stay safe, respectful, and responsible online. This includes lessons on privacy, cyberbullying, and recognizing misinformation.

If you have questions about your child’s device or online activity, please contact your school’s Tech Facilitator.

At Rowan-Salisbury Schools, we take your child’s data privacy seriously. From classroom apps to online assessments, every digital tool we use is carefully reviewed to ensure that student information is protected.

  • App and Tool Vetting: Before any digital resource is used in the classroom, it must be reviewed and approved by our Technology Department for compliance with state and federal privacy laws, including FERPA and COPPA.
  • Secure Systems: We use secure platforms like ClassLink for single sign-on and Mosyle to manage and protect student devices. These tools help us limit access to sensitive information.
  • Limited Data Sharing: We only share the minimum required information with approved educational partners — and only for educational purposes.
  • Monitoring & Auditing: Our systems are regularly monitored for suspicious activity. We also use Gaggle to monitor student Google accounts for potential safety concerns while maintaining data security.

We encourage families to:

  • Talk with children about what personal information is and when not to share it
  • Avoid logging into school accounts on public or shared devices
  • Reach out if you have questions about any tools being used in your child’s classroom

Protecting student data is a shared responsibility — and we’re committed to doing our part every step of the way.

You play an important role in your child’s success — and technology gives you more ways than ever to stay involved. Here’s how you can help your child thrive in Rowan-Salisbury Schools’ digital learning environment:

Set Up for Success

Make sure your child’s iPad or MacBook is charged each night and ready for school.

Create a quiet, distraction-free spot at home where your child can focus on schoolwork.

Help them use ClassLink to access school-approved learning tools quickly and securely.

Stay Involved

Log into Infinite Campus regularly to check grades, attendance, and progress.

Ask your child what they’re working on in Canvas, and check for assignment deadlines.

Review their use of AI tools (when applicable) and help them understand responsible use.

Talk About Online Behavior

Remind your child to treat others with respect online just like in person.

Discuss how to recognize unsafe content and when to come to you or a teacher for help.

Reinforce the importance of not sharing passwords or personal information.

Reach Out When Needed

If your child’s device isn’t working or something seems off, let the school know.

You can talk to a Tech Facilitator or message your school through ParentSquare.
